Comfort
“Colonel?” Hammond repeated, frown furrowing his brow with concern. “Your report?”
Jack closed his eyes, mentally preparing himself to recount the details of the latest in a long string of near disastrous missions. He opened his mouth, but the words wouldn’t come. He glanced automatically to the man seated next to him, but turned back almost immediately; the move was too risky while he was feeling so vulnerable.
Daniel leaned forward in his chair; the movement rolling him closer to Jack, and under the table, Jack felt the back of Daniel’s hand brush against his thigh. Jack subtly pushed his own chair a few millimeters closer to Daniel’s and let his hands drop into his lap.
He slid his hand down his own leg until it covered the warm weight stroking his thigh. Daniel flipped Jack’s hand over, laced their fingers together and squeezed briefly before withdrawing, thumb gently rubbing over the pulse point in Jack’s wrist as it slipped away, the gentle reassurance lasting no more than a few seconds.
Jack took a deep breath and launched into his report, buoyed by the memory of Daniel’s hand and the length of long leg still pressed tightly to his own.

From:B-Day Fic: In Your Own Backyard
Date: 2009-07-19 08:14 pm (UTC)In Your Own Backyard for
After missing Jack’s last checkup with Janet and his escape from the infirmary the night before, Daniel finally got to Jack’s house and started to knock before he got the sense – inexplicable but certain – that Jack wasn’t in the house. He dropped his hand and walked around the corner into the backyard.
The lawn was freshly mowed, the shed doors were wide open and there was a wheel barrow filled with damp dirt near the raised planting bed along the deck, but no Jack. Daniel wandered further into the yard, enjoying the light breeze and the quiet. After that last mission, both were welcome. With his eyes closed and face lifted to the sunlight, Daniel simply stood for a moment, letting the tension drain away.
A low curse drew his attention to the shadows under the trees, where the level plot took a slight dip before the land started its rise into the hills of the preserve that abutted Jack’s property. Leave it to Jack to build his house somewhere that backed up to undevelopable wilderness, guaranteed in perpetuity by federal law. Here, Jack would never have to worry about being trapped or fenced in with no possibility of escape. Daniel winced at the thought and wished it were always that easy.
He unconsciously hunched his shoulders as he stepped through the gap in the rhododendrons – the only ones he’s ever seen in the Springs – with their riot of reddish-pink blooms. He could tell by the smell that the mulch was fresh, which meant Jack had already been out to the garden center once. Daniel checked his watch and winced again, wondering if Jack had slept at all. Another exclamation, this one a pained hiss, had Daniel moving swiftly along the until he found Jack standing in a small pool of muddy water, maneuvering a rock the size of two basketballs into place. Daniel circled around, made sure of his footing on the soft earth, then reached down to help. A grunt and a jerk of the chin were enough to point out the hole that Jack was aiming for, so Daniel stabilized while Jack lifted and there was a satisfying thunk when the stone slid home. There was a trickle of water running over and around larger stones into a small depression, lined with tightly packed small stones over a pond liner. Jack was scooping out the mud and silt that had already settled to leave the water as clear as possible.
Daniel straightened and stepped back, watching the play of muscles as Jack worked. He noted the dirt-streaked tee, the grass stains on jeans soaked to mid-thigh and the muddy boots. As Jack used another handful of mud to support the stones lining the rim of his pool, Daniel saw the torn skin and sluggishly bleeding knuckles. Under the dirt and blood, bruises from their last mission were beginning to yellow on the backs of Jack’s hands and on his upper arms. There’d be more bruises under the shirt, a boot print on the abdomen and frighteningly dark marks over the kidneys. Janet had kept Jack in the infirmary for days, monitoring kidney function carefully. He shook off the memory and blew out a breath. He itched to get his hands on Jack, to tend and heal and soothe, but knew that any sudden move on his part would be bad. Jack needed time to lick his wounds by himself before he’d accept any help from Daniel.
Jack stood, stretching his back and shaking out his arms to release the tension from his muscles, the cracking of his back making him grimace. He ran his arm across his forehead, clearing sweat from his eyes and finally seemed to notice Daniel’s presence. “Hey.”
“Hey.” Daniel did his best to hide his concern, “yard looks good.”
“Yeah? Thanks.” Jack looked around vaguely, still not entirely there. “Been meaning to get this done for years,” he said, indicating the now bubbling spring and shallow pool as he stepped up out of the water. “With all the wildlife out here, seemed like a good idea.”
Daniel didn’t say anything about why Jack, hours out of the infirmary with strict instructions to take it easy would instead spend his time carving out a watering hole for the animals that ranged freely into and out of his property. He also didn’t point out that he’d just made the precious rhododendrons all the more attractive to the local deer population. Instead he smiled and said, “I like it. Wonder if you’ll be able to hear it from the house.”
“Maybe,” Jack frowned at his torn knuckles, as if just realizing they hurt. “I gotta get cleaned up. You coming?” Without waiting, he turned and strode off for the house, leaving muddy boots at the door before opening the slider and stepping into the living room.
Daniel followed behind, silently. The slight hitch in Jack’s voice meant he was nearing the end of his reserves and a crash was inevitable. He shadowed Jack through the house, stopping only to grab a bottle of water and the pain meds from the kitchen counter. Maybe, if he was lucky, he could convince Jack to take them.
Without asking, but telegraphing his intentions, Daniel helped Jack shuck the filthy jeans – nothing underneath, but right now Daniel was more worried than aroused – and the tee-shirt. Jack hissed as the hot water hit his scrapes and bruises, then gasped as a naked and determined Daniel crowded him back under the spray. “Let me,” Daniel whispered, with one hand spread over Jack’s heart and the other curled around his neck, “please, I need to do this.” It was shamelessly trading on Jack’s caretaking instincts, but Daniel didn’t care. If he had to guilt and manipulate Jack into accepting help, he’d do it.
Jack nodded and Daniel quickly but gently washed Jack, taking care but not lingering over the bruises and scars, not wanting to draw Jack’s attention to them. When he was done and they were both rinsed and dried, he turned Jack back to face him, soothing the still-tight shoulders. The haze of tiredness that had been in Jack’s eyes began to crack, revealing a confused hurt that almost crushed Daniel. Without another word, Daniel hauled him close, wrapped arms around him, one hand carding through grey hair when Jack burrowed into the hollow of Daniel’s throat. Daniel closed his eyes in relief as he felt Jack let go, felt the dampness on his shoulder, the desperate strength of the hands on his back, and the near-silent sobs of a strong man pushed too far.
Daniel struggled to stay in the moment and not get lost in memories, but the strangled gasps and half-voiced questions torn from Jack made that impossible. It was impossible to shake the memory of the smoke and the screams of people and animals deliberately trapped in a box canyon while fuel and fire poured down upon them from above. It was genocide, nothing less. An entire village – men, women, children and animals – already suffering from drought and blight, punished for resorting to raiding the town above. Punished when raiding was their only recourse after the townspeople dammed the river and fouled the wells that supplied the only potable water to the canyon. Daniel closed his eyes and saw again Jack’s incandescent fury, Sam’s horror and Teal’c’s stony resolve as they were forced to witness the atrocity. The indifferent town elders sat in comfort while their sentence was carried out and a people obliterated.
Was it any wonder that Jack felt the need to be outside, coaxing a low, boggy spot on his property into becoming a spring-fed pool, available to anyone or anything who might need it? Daniel tightened his hold and pressed soft kisses into Jack’s hair, swamped with love and grief.
As Jack gradually calmed, Daniel loosened his hold and began stroking Jack’s back, belatedly realizing that the lingering tremors were at least partly from standing naked in the chill of the bathroom. He led Jack to the bedroom, got them both dressed in sweatpants and flannel then nudged Jack out to the living room and into a chair. Daniel fetched the first aid kit and bandaged Jack’s knuckles, got him to take a pain pill, slid the glass slider open and the screen closed so that the warm air flooded in and finally curled himself into his usual spot on the couch. Jack had rearranged the living room a month or so back and Daniel had an unobstructed view straight out over the deck into the backyard. The sun was still shining, turning the flowers and greenery into a glowing riot of color that was somehow both peaceful and joyful at the same time.
After a few minutes, Jack, who had remained silent since they’d stepped out of the bathroom, moved from the chair to the couch. He lay down on his side, his head resting on Daniel’s thigh and his feet tucked between the cushion and the arm of the couch. Daniel tugged Jack’s mother’s woven throw down off the sofa back and tossed it over Jack’s knees and feet. Jack reached up for Daniel’s hand, kissed it in thanks and threaded their fingers together before tucking their clasped hands under his cheek and staring out into the yard.
Daniel had to close his eyes. Stupid to want to cry now. Jack was boneless beside him, silent and solemn, the only sign of the rage and manic energy that had fueled him since his release from the mountain the pristine yard and the barely audible sound of running water. Daniel’s own grief and pain had been mostly submerged in caring for Jack. His anger would wait until Jack pushed him into a senseless argument in their next hand-to-hand training session. They each had their coping mechanisms and so far, they worked. That was for later. For the moment, it was enough that they were together.
A nudge from Jack made Daniel open his eyes in time to see a doe and her fawn stepping delicately through the trees into the yard before continuing on their way. It was hard not to see it as a benediction. Apparently, Jack felt the same way because he sighed deeply and started talking.
“D’you know much about the Navajo?” He asked very quietly.
“Some,” Daniel could hear the despair lingering in Jack’s voice and knew it was not an idle question.
“Know anything about the Long Walk?” Jack was still quiet, still mostly relaxed, but he moved to pull the blanket up to his shoulders.
“Forced resettlement of the Navajo people to the Bosque Redondo reservation in New Mexico near Fort Sumner.” Daniel used his free hand to secure the blanket over Jack’s shoulders and then started stroking the base of Jack’s neck and into his shoulder.
“Yeah,” Jack fell silent again and Daniel waited, this was an unexpected topic. “What about Canyon de Chelly?” It took a minute for Daniel to process the question. His attention was caught by the pronunciation, de shay, two syllables but with a lilt at the end that Daniel had only ever heard from native – hah, no pun – speakers.
“Jack,” Daniel almost stopped breathing.
“My great-great – I forget how many great’s there should be – grandmother was born there.”
“God.”
“Yeah.”
No wonder Jack was taking this mission so much to heart. The Army had blocked off exits from the network of canyons and swept through, killing men women and children, burning homes, livestock, orchards and collecting those who remained for a forced march – in winter – to a reservation that was completely inadequate to support life.
And on that damned planet it had happened again. And Jack had been forced to watch.
“Daniel,” Jack’s voice was insistent, worried. Daniel realized he’d been lost in his thoughts for too long.
“I’m here,” he squeezed Jack’s shoulder.
“It’s okay, Daniel.” Jack shrugged a bit, “well, not okay, but it’s just…” he sighed, “I needed you to know.”
“God, Jack. I’m so sorry.”
“Yeah, me too.”
“I want there to be something I can do.”
“Daniel, you can’t take this on, too.” Jack tightened his grip on Daniel’s hand. “Just, be here.” He kissed Daniel’s palm, turned and stroked his cheek over their joined hands. “It’s enough.”
Daniel hoped it was true. Hoped he could be what Jack needed. He leaned back and his eyes went to the yard again and he stilled, meeting the wild and oddly wise eyes of the doe that looked for all the world like she was checking in on them while her fawn nosed around. “I’m here.” He said. “Whatever you need, I’m here.”
